Department Description

Our laboratory elucidates the biological basis of four addictive diseases: opiate addiction, cocaine addiction, nicotine addiction and alcoholism. Our related goals are to: 1) determine the biological correlates of addictive diseases and the existing or novel treatments thereof. and 2) expand information concerning the major medical complications of drug abuse, primarily hepatitis C and AIDS. Our basic laboratory and clinical studies focus on determining the role of the endogenous opioid system in addictive diseases and the roles of specific opioid peptides and receptors in the normal and abnormal physiology of the neuroendocrine, immune and gastrointestinal systems.

Detailed Description

The Research Assistant will participate in multiple aspects of clinical research and perform studies on the neuroendocrine effects of drug abuse. Will coordinate patient management and specimen processing, perform laboratory assays for measurement of a variety of neuropeptides, and participate in genetic projects involving DNA isolation and data entry. Will have the opportunity to begin an individual project working with a scientist within the laboratory on current and ongoing research after six months of employment.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in science required; educational emphasis in neuroscience or molecular biology preferred. Must be familiar with basic molecular biology techniques and data analysis, and be a self-motivated individual, able to work both independently and as part of a team.
