Rockefeller University provides a variety of housing accommodations in support of the scientific needs of the University. Apartments and dormitories are available to full-time faculty and students, and hotel accommodations are available for faculty and guests of the Rockefeller community. The Housing Department provides a safe, secure, affordable residence that is conveniently located near the campus. Most of the University's apartments are located in full-service apartment buildings, with door staff and a variety of amenities. A few smaller apartment buildings are located within a short walking distance from campus. Dormitories and guest accommodations are located on the main campus. The Rockefeller campus is located on the Upper East Side, one of New York's most desirable residential neighborhoods. The 45-person housing staff consists of a group of mechanics, porters, housekeepers, and doorpersons, a superintendent for each building, and an office staff to address administrative needs.
Working under the direction of the Building Superintendent and the Supervisor, the Mechanic will repair problems in apartments, maintain and repair all building-wide systems and equipment, and respond to emergency repairs as needed. Responsibilities include scheduling repairs in response to tenants' maintenance request, maintaining all mechanical rooms and machinery, workshops, equipment rooms, and storage rooms neatly and in good working order, keeping equipment and tools organized and in good working order; and maintaining an inventory of replacement parts, including electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and lock supplies. Will conduct periodic preventive maintenance on equipment such as belt replacements, cleaning and replacement of filters, and cleaning, lubrication, repair, and replacement of motors and pumps. Will test and log the emergency generator, maintain and treat water for a children's sprinkler, change air conditioning filters, and treat cooling waters.
High School or Trade School diploma or equivalent required. Must have three to five years of relevant experience in mechanical repair or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a general knowledge of all building systems and mechanical equipment used in residential buildings, including locks, flooring, windows, plumbing, electricity and switches, alarms, steam traps, packing, pipes, and valves, HVAC systems, and all mechanical system. Must have the ability to interact courteously with tenants and get along well with others in the workgroup and the Housing Department.
