The goal of Information Technology (IT) is to provide information resources and services to accelerate and support scientific research at The Rockefeller University. Our department is responsible for cyberinfrastructure, high-performance computing, bioinformatics, decision support, data analytics, cybersecurity, and the scientific and administrative software environment at the university. The department is in the midst of a major transition in culture, including the adoption of DevOps and Agile practices, the facilitation of self-service approaches, as well as a "cloud first" deployment philosophy.
Will work as part of the Networking Group who provides networking and communications solutions for the University's enterprise business functions, and also designs and implements integrated solutions that support world-class, cutting-edge scientific research applications. The Network Engineer will work closely with other members of the network team to design, install, and configure core and edge routers and backbone, data center, and access switches, configure and troubleshoot routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, MPLS, VXLAN with BGP EVPN, Multicast, etc.), and interface with ISPs that provide Internet and WAN access. The Network Engineer will also maintain the integrity of the DNS/DHCP systems and VPN concentrators, as well as device status and network throughput monitoring systems. Firewall maintenance and configuration are a shared responsibility with the Information Security team within the IT Department. Will continuously research and prototype new products and technologies, perform technical analysis of network software and hardware, and make recommendations regarding adoption of new technologies and operational procedures, particularly in the areas of network automation and real-time monitoring and analytics. The University is in the early stages of a comprehensive network core, building distribution, and data center network refresh, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to profoundly influence the university network services delivery methods, security standards, monitoring services, and SDN futures.
Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer information systems, computer engineering, engineering or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution required. Must have a minimum of four years of progressive networking experience. Some experience in an academic environment is preferred. Must have experience with OSPFv2, OSPFv3, EIGRP, EIGRPv3, BGP w/AFI, DMVPN, VXLAN w/BGP EVPN, MPLS, VPLS, EoMPLS, Multicast (PIM, DVMRP), Wireless Controllers, RADIUS/TACACS+, Spanning Tree protocols (PVST+, RSTP, MSTP), strong layer 2 and layer 3 troubleshooting skills, Wireshark, iperf, DNS/DHCP, SNMPv3, monitoring tools, IPv4/IPv6 implementation, and firewall configuration. Knowledge of Cisco, Aruba, Brocade, and Dell technologies, Infoblox, FlowTraq Netflow monitoring, scripting (Python, Ansible), Telecom-VoIP (especially Avaya), Science DMZ design and implementation, perfSONAR, hardware VPN setup over WAN (with and without split tunnels), application load balancers (e.g. F5, HAProxy) preferred.
