Rockefeller University Research Assistant, Genetics in New York, New York

Job: IRC26214

Job Title Research Assistant, Genetics

Laboratory / Department Genetics

Department Description

We explore the activities of certain genes that control circadian (daily) rhythms in Drosophila. Interactions among these genes, and their proteins, set up a network of molecular oscillations within single cells. These oscillations are autonomously generated in most tissues, and establish overt rhythms in the fly?s physiology and behavior. This mechanism is conserved within the animal kingdom. So much so that ?clock? genes originally detected in the fruitfly regulate patterns of sleep and other rhythms in humans. We also study neural development, especially action of the neurogenic genes of Drosophila. These determine some of the earliest cell fates in the developing embryo.

Detailed Description

The Research Assistant will work closely with members of the laboratory on a project exploring the physiological importance of sleep and circadian rhythms in Drosophila on a molecular, cellular and organismal level. Responsibilities include assisting in fly husbandry, microinjections, tissue dissections, and behavioral analyses as well as performing DNA/RNA analysis, molecular cloning, Western blot analysis, and immunocytochemistry. Will produce and analyze data, think critically, get exposure to primary literature and communicate their research findings. #INDRE

Bachelor's degree in science required; educational emphasis in molecular biology and genetics preferred. Must have exceptional communication and organizational skills and be diligent and reliable. Working familiarity with Drosophila, immunocytochemistry, and molecular biology methods preferred. Computer proficiency and experience with MS Excel are essential.
