Rockefeller University Research Assistant (Part-time, 20 hours/week) in New York, New York

Job: IRC22463

Job Title Research Assistant (Part-time, 20 hours/week)

Laboratory / Department Behavioral Neuroscience

Department Description

Body weight is determined by a delicate balance between behavioral processes of nutrient ingestion and physiological processes of nutrient metabolism and storage. Abnormal body weight regulation, e.g., in obesity, type II diabetes and eating disorders, reflects disturbances in both these behavioral and metabolic functions. The brain plays a key role in controlling and coordinating the various components of these complex systems. These components include various peptides, as well as classical neurotransmitters, synthesized in different neuronal cell groups of the brain. Additionally, there are a variety of humoral substances in the blood that modulate the expression level of these neurochemicals. This laboratory pursues a multidisciplinary approach to identify these different neurobiological substrates of energy and nutrient balance. With a focus on natural behavioral and physiological responses, we systematically characterize the essential neurochemicals and neurohormones as they function and interact under normal conditions. At the same time, we track disturbances in these mechanisms, caused by environmental or genetic factors, that may contribute to abnormal behavioral and metabolic responses.

Detailed Description

The Research Assistant will contribute to studies examining the effects of prenatal exposure to alcohol and fat-rich food on development of embryo brains and behavior. Responsibilities will include molecular and animal model laboratory experiments, writing and submitting various scientific communications, managing rodent colonies, and supporting general lab management tasks. The Research Assistant will work within a dynamic laboratory environment, mainly with fellow research assistants and postdocs. The Research Assistant will also have the opportunity to develop an independent research project, within the scope of the lab's interests, and potential co-authorship on the lab's publications.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in science required; educational emphasis in biology, biochemistry, neuroscience or related fields preferred. Must have experience with molecular biology techniques (qRT-PCR, immunofluorescence, in situ histochemistry, ELISA), behavioral measures, and general lab management tasks. Must have strong communication, writing and organizational skills.
