Job Title Research Assistant

Laboratory / Department Virology and Infectious Disease

Department Description

Our work focuses on several different aspects of molecular virology, biochemical and structural virology, viral pathogenesis and vaccine development. The laboratory studies animal RNA viruses, including hepatitis C virus (HCV), yellow fever virus (prototype flavivirus), bovine viral diarrhea virus (a pestivirus) and Sindbis virus (a togavirus).

Detailed Description

The Research Assistant will assist with experiments designed to develop possible live-attenuated vaccine candidates for Powassan virus and test them in a murine model. In addition to general laboratory tasks such as ordering and making of solutions, responsibilities include performing cloning steps to generate the plasmids encoding the vaccine candidates, make RNA in vitro, transfect that RNA into mammalian cell culture and quantify the viral genome RNA and virions. Will also test the candidates in mice for disease properties and carry out vaccination and challenge experiments.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in science required; educational emphasis in the life sciences preferred. Must be well organized, have excellent oral and written communication skills, and demonstrate strong attention to detail and focus. Experience in cell culture, molecular biological techniques such as cloning, DNA preparation, PCR and working with viruses and mice are a plus. Must be willing to work with radioactivity and infectious viruses.

Additional Details

The project entails working with a human pathogen (Powassan virus) that can cause encephalitis, and for which there is no specific treatment. Work will be conducted using biosafety level 3 practices.
