Rockefeller University Research Assistant in New York, New York

Department Description

The Laboratory of Genome Architecture and Dynamics studies how the three-dimensional architecture of the genome reflects and regulates DNA-based processes, with a focus on short-range contacts and biophysical mechanisms of transcriptional silencing. By developing integrative models of the molecular interactions that regulate access to the genome, we hope to understand and rationally manipulate changes in chromatin architecture and gene expression during differentiation and cell reprogramming, in transitions between growth, quiescence and senescence, and in the dysregulated cellular states found in cancer. We use mammalian primary cells and cell lines as model systems. Our approaches include sequencing-based genomic assays, biochemistry, microscopy and modeling. We are also actively developing new methods for probing chromatin architecture in intact cells.

Detailed Description

The Research Assistant will work closely with the Head of Lab (HOL) to help set up a newly established Laboratory at the University. Responsibilities during the lab set up phase will include setting up equipment, ordering and receiving reagents, helping to establish and maintain lab organization and performing experiments to validate that cell lines, reagents, equipment and procedures are working as expected in the new lab. After initial setup, the Research Assistant will work with the HOL, graduate students and postdocs on lab work including tissue culture, custom DNA sequencing library preparation, microscopy, and standard molecular biology to support ongoing projects. The Research Assistant will also have the opportunity to develop an independent research project within the scope of the lab's interests, under the mentorship of the Head of Lab. As a founding member, the Research Assistant will play a key role in establishing both the organization and culture of the lab and will have extensive opportunities to gain new skills through interactions with colleagues and collaborators in other labs.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in science required; education emphasis in biological sciences, physics, chemistry, applied or pure mathematics, computer science or engineering preferred. Some laboratory experience and familiarity with molecular biology is required. Tissue culture experience is a plus. Must be an eager and fast learner, meticulous in the work, have strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and have an encouraging outlook that will help set the tone for the lab's culture. The ideal candidate should also have a deep interest in the biological or biomedical sciences.
