Laboratory / Department Molecular Genetics

Department Description

Our current research is focused on the genes and regulatory mechanisms that control body weight, leptins mechanism of action, and its relevance to the pathogenesis of obesity. Other studies seek to elucidate the mechanism by which a single molecule, leptin, can modulate a complex behavior, feeding. Finally, efforts to establish the genetic basis of human obesity on the Pacific Island of Kosrae are also under way.

Detailed Description

The Research Assistant will support experiments designed to elucidate the neurocircuitry underlying feeding and reward behaviors. Responsibilities include assisting postdocs primarily with mouse surgeries and behavioral assays as well as immunohistochemistry and mouse colony maintenance.In addition, the Research Assistant will be responsible for various general laboratory tasks such as buffer preparation and managing of lab supplies and stocks.

Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in science required; educational emphasis in biology and/or neuroscience preferred. Experience with basic skills in mouse handling and genetics, as well as molecular biology preferred. Must be willing to work with rodents. Must be highly organized, dependable, and interested in learning new information and acquiring new skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills required, as well as the ability to work as part of a team necessary. Must be facile in basic math skills and familiar with basic computer software such as Word and Excel.
